Learn to Fly and Dare to Dream
Learn to Fly and Dare to Dream
Ever since I was a little girl I have wanted to fly. It was something my father loved and as a military brat I can remember one of my father’s best friends coming over while still wearing his flight uniform. It was always a dream of mine but something my father insisted was not for a hobby for a girl. I think a lot of people fantasize about the freedom and excitement of flying but never do anything about it. For the first half of my life I too was one of those people.
Having survived cancer in 2011, I decided that I would no longer put things on hold. One of the blessings that came out of that situation was clarity and perspective. It forced me to see that life was too short to sit on the sidelines and be a spectator in my own life. It was time to try new things and take action and flying just happened to be one of those things. It’s funny as I have been around aviation for most of my life but never took action before.
As a magazine publisher and a former TV personality I decided to share my experience as it is my hope that it will inspire others to fly. I was fortunate to have an amazing instructor Chuck Lapmardo of Elite Flight training in Scottsdale Arizona to serve as my instructor for my introductory flight. We went through preflight in class and then out to the gorgeous and modern Cirrus SR-22. I love that this school only utilized instructors with extensive real world experience.
That day was intense as I sat on the runway watching much bigger planes take off and land only a few feet away from us. The momentum started to build as the tower gave us clearance to take off. I will never forget the intense emotions of that day. The feeling of freedom I experienced will stay with me forever. I am so glad that I finally quit talking about it and actually took action. So many people talk about their dreams but never make them happen! Here is the blessing cancer taught me… Learn to fly, dare to dream as tomorrow isn’t here and may not come, seize the day!
